Health Plan Options

UNC Charlotte offers medical benefits to permanent and temporary employees.  Permanent employees may elect coverage through the State Health Plan, temporary employees working 30 or more hours may be eligible for benefits in compliance with the Affordable Care Act. 

State Health Plan Options (Permanent Employees)

The State Health Plan offers two Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) Plans and a Consumer Directed Health Plan from which to choose.

The effective date of coverage for new eligible employees is the first day of the month following the date of employment, or the first day of the second month.The employee and any eligible dependents must enroll in the State Health Plan with the same effective date.  

The effective date for existing eligible employees is the first of the month following a qualifying event (loss of coverage, marriage, divorce, birth, etc.,).

State Health Plan's High Deductible Health Plan

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires the University to offer heath insurance to non-permanent employees working an average of 30 or more hours per week over a 3 month time period.  The State Health Plan offers a high deductible health benefit to non-permanent employees hired prior to January 1, 2015, base upon a 12 month look back period, and to non-permanent employees hired on or after January 1, 2015, working 30 or more hours per week for 3 months.
