The Leadership Experience

The fall session of The Leadership Experience is now open for application.  Click here to begin the process.

UNC Charlotte offers a unique, semester long, professional development opportunity that is available to campus leaders who have been in their role for some time.  The Leadership Experience was designed to position Human Resources as a key partner in Leadership Development by working closely with business leaders to develop an experience that adds value in reaching the University organizational goals.

Key components of the program are:

  • Actively engages the manager of the participant
  • Includes quantifiable metrics to support impact
  • Contains pre/post activities to assist with transfer of learning to the job
  • Team capstone project is based on the life cycle of a University employee and the role of the leader

Each team selects a topic of their choice to research during the course of the program.  They conduct surveys and interviews, benchmark against other institutions, formulate recommendations and present their findings in two ways:

  1. A white paper that supports their business case
  2. A team presentation to their managers and other campus leaders

Two of the 2016 team’s findings have found a larger audience.  One of the team chose the broad topic of how to better utilize space and resources within the campus. After some brainstorming, they focused on the topic of consolidating the purchase and maintenance of the campus motor fleet.  This topic supported a Chancellor sponsored initiative, the Congestion Task Force.  The team felt that this subject had the most relevance on campus.  As a result, they were invited to speak at a meeting of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and present their findings.

Another team selected the topic of Fostering Community Engagement. The team researched the current policies and practices for sponsoring and volunteering in community initiatives and made recommendations on how to further promote staff and faculty involvement.  Their findings were presented to the Chancellor’s Cabinet as part of a wider project. This project was initiated by the Vice Chancellor of University Advancement who was championing a team charged with increasing community involvement.  They were also asked to present at the national Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) conference.

Both of these are examples of the way in which The Leadership Experience helped other areas within the UNC Charlotte community meet their strategic goals by solving real problems that impact the entire campus.
